The Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod is the “older brother” of the Manfrotto 190XPROB. It’s virtually identical except for the length and weight, whereupon the 055XPROB weighs a heavier 2.4kg, versus 1.8kg for the Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod. You may find the Manfrotto 190XPROB here.
Being virtually identical with the Manfrotto comes with it’s benefits, weaknesses and features. For a full discourse on the 055XPROB tripod features, kindly view them on the Manfrotto 190XPROB page here. In summary, for features, the Manfrotto 055XPROB comes with
- Adjustable Center Column
- Attached Bubble Spirit Level
- Quick Action Leg Locks for quick deployment
What are the advantages of the 055XPROB over the 190XPROB tripod?
Compared to the Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod, the 055XPROB is much studier. It rates at a maximum payload of 7 kg, instead of the 5 kg for the 190XPROB. It also has a maximum height of 142 cm with the center column down. This is crucial as the extension of the center column would drastically reduce tripod stability. And that is one of the reasons why we do not buy into the marketing gimmick of small but sturdy tripods.
At the maximum height of 142 cm, the 055XPROB is a good height for many photographers, without needing the photographers to bend awkwardly in order to get a shot. It would also help as you would not need to extend the center column if you’re 160 cm and above. That helps much in the stability of the tripod, which influences the sharpness of your photograph.
Disadvantages of the Manfrotto 055XPROB?
Now that we have spoken about the advantages of the 055XPROB, let’s look into it’s weaknesses versus the popular Manfrotto 190XPROB. Among others, if you don’t need the height or don’t mind bending over when shooting, you will save yourself some weight. The 055XPROB weighs a ton at 2.4 kg, not exactly the lightest thing. And weight especially matters if you’re travelling, hiking or basically lugging it around for some time.
The work around for the weight is to consider the slightly pricier 055CXPRO3 or the 055CX3.
